Kiwi
Kiwi are one of Aotearoa’s most unique native bird species. Flightless and nocturnal, they use their long beaks to forage at night for insects, worms and other invertebrates. Unlike most birds, kiwi have nostrils near the tip of their beak, giving them an incredible sense of smell, and their strong legs contain bone marrow, making them surprisingly powerful for their size. They nest in burrows, hollow logs, dense vegetation or under tree roots.
Although deeply tied to New Zealand’s national identity, kiwi remain under threat from introduced predators such as stoats, ferrets, cats and dogs, as well as habitat loss and vehicle strikes. However, conservation efforts, including predator control, kiwi-safe habitat restoration, and breeding and repopulation programmes, are helping give kiwi a better chance to survive and thrive in the wild.
